Daruma is a Japanese doll used as a talisman against illness or to promote success. Any item with the symbol should be given as a wedding gift or for the birth of a child. The back of the bottle is Kanji, a system of Japanese writing based on Chinese characters, and read "seven down, eight up" -- an analogy for perseverance.
