A Favorite Recipe: Som Tum Thai
Ingredients
½ cup raw papaya, peeled and shredded
½ cup carrot, peeled and shredded
2 tablespoons dried shrimp, soaked in water & drained
3 yard-long beans, cut into 1 inch lengths
1 medium sized tomato, quartered
4 cloves garlic
5-6 Thai hot chilies (Phrik Khee Nuu)
1 tablespoon roasted peanut
3 tablespoons palm sugar
3 tablespoons Thai fish sauce
1 tablespoon lime juice
1 tablespoon tamarind juice
Preparation method
- Pound the chilies with garlic thoroughly in a mortar and pestle, follow with dried shrimp and pound again. Then, add yard-long beans, papaya & carrot and continue pounding until thoroughly mixed
- Add tomato and roasted peanut, and continue to mix together in the mortar.
- Season to taste with palm sugar, Thai fish sauce, lime juice and tamarind juice. Check for taste and adjust according to your preference.
- Serve with sticky rice or as a snack with fresh vegetables like Chinese cabbage, cabbage, yard-long beans.
